Triage Master

PROBLEM

Mass/multi casualty (MC) events are catastrophic. The involvement of multiple casualties can readily overwhelm the resources available to a single health professional and health professional teams. Such events occur from man-made or natural disasters and cause devastating injuries to large numbers of people and disastrous losses to entire communities. It is imperative paramedics are effectively trained to respond. Current MC training practices for paramedics have been described as ‘clunky’, costly, highly-resource intensive and providing limited learning value.

SOLUTION

Create a fully immersive 360 virtual reality environment which simulates a mass casualty event to build resilience and provide affordable, repeatable, data-intensive learning sessions. The scene features actors with different injuries and in varying states of distress. The user can interact with these actors in the simulation to get information about their vital signs, including their heart rate and breathing, and assign them a priority for treatment.

Unlike live simulations where there are variables that can’t be controlled, such as the actors’ performances, with a VR experience we can ensure that each student receives the exact same experience.

PROCESS

Virtual Guest collaborated with Edith Cowan University to develop a training scenario focusing on triage training. A film production pipeline was adhered to in synergy to software development to create a layer of interactivity over the immersive 360 degree video.

User data including the time taken to complete scenario, and interactive decisions are captured. This data is then visualised on Virtual Guest’s proprietary platform, allowing trainers to review a range of analytics on-demand.

RESULT

Highly commended by industry professionals and paramedics in training.
